A two-day seminar will be held at the University of Leicester on 25-26 September as part of the ESRC Research Seminar Series. The seminar will cover the three main themes of the series: politics, multiculturalism and media.
A keynote guest public lecture will be given by human rights lawyer Phil Shiner entitled: ‘The UK Torture Team: British Use of Coercive Interrogation Techniques from Northern Ireland to Iraq’.
Other speakers for the seminar so far include: Carole Boudeau (University of Warwick); Nigel Dower (University of Aberdeen); Zarin Hainsworth (UNIFEM UK); Giles Moss (University of Oxford); Ben O’Loughlin (Royal Holloway, University of London); David Wills (University of Birmingham); Heather Widdows (University of Birmingham); Gillian Youngs (University of Leicester).
We would like to receive further paper proposals, including from PhD students, which specifically address ethics and the war on terror in relation to political, multicultural or media issues. Please email a title, 250-word abstract and your affiliation details to Gillian Youngs as soon as possible and no later than September 5 2008.
The seminar is open to policy-related and practitioner participants as well as academics and research students. The number of places is limited to 30. Anyone wishing to attend should email Gillian Youngs to book a place. There is no charge for the seminar and lunch and refreshments are provided. For those presenting papers standard rail travel and overnight accommodation expenses where necessary will be covered.
